The Lancaster Brewery Student’s Guide to Christmas
Lancaster is a vibrant university city, with around 15,000 students choosing to live and study in our historic city. With that in mind, we’ve come up with some festive suggestions for Lancaster’s students who are looking for some things to do in the run-up to Christmas.
Get into the festive spirit by visiting us at Lancaster Brewery. Why not stop by our Brewery Tap with your friends for a relaxed drink, where you can sample some of our most popular beers. Along with our wide range of cask beers, we also serve quality wines, spirits, coffees, teas and soft drinks, so whether you come to see us with your housemates, or if your family have come to visit and you want to show them around, there’s a drink to suit everyone. We always get the newest beers from our seasonal range in the Brewery Tap before anywhere else, so it’s a great opportunity to try something new!
We also offer Brewery Tours, which are a great experience to share with friends but also would make a fantastic Christmas gift (more on that later!). We offer the following tours:
Amber Tour: A 45-minute tour of the brewery; afterwards, you can enjoy 5 beer samples at the bar.
Blonde Tour: A 45-minute tour of the brewery with a brewer’s snack and drinks included. Before or after your tour, enjoy a handmade pork pie and pickles, with up to 3 pints of your choice from the selection on the bar.
Red Tour: A 45-minute tour of the brewery with lunch and drinks included. Before or after your tour, enjoy a handmade pie from our local supplier (all the recipes include one of our ales) with peas and gravy, plus up to 4 pints of your choice from the selection on the bar. You'll also receive a 10% discount on any purchases from our shop.
Be a Brewer For a Day: A truly unforgettable experience for the craft ale fanatic in your life. Our ‘Be A Brewer for the Day’ lets you experience the joy of brewing your own beer and honing your brewing skills! You’ll spend the day as part of our award-winning team, and work alongside our Master Brewer.
Our brewery tours are a great day out, and would be a fantastic gift for a friend or family member who loves their craft ales. We offer gift vouchers for Lancaster Brewery, ranging from our brewery tour experiences to monetary vouchers, which make wonderful Christmas presents. You can visit our gift shop here.
There’s also plenty of Christmassy events going on in Lancaster city centre to get you in the mood for the most wonderful time of the year. Dalton Square has been transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with an ice rink and Christmas market, as part of Lancaster on Ice. The ice rink is open seven days a week between 10am and 10pm, but if you don’t feel like skating, you can still visit the market stalls in the square or visit the Bar Humbug tipi, where you can get cosy by the fire with mulled wine, German beer or a bratwurst hot dog.
Lancaster Castle is holding its own festive fayre with their Christmas at the Castle event on the 15th and 16th December. The market will be free to enter and open between 10:30am and 5pm, with 40 stalls to explore. The huge variety of stalls will include everything from crafts such as handmade jewellery, wood crafts, candles, beauty products and art, as well as a wide selection of hot and cold food stores, including hog roasts, artisan coffee, crepes and waffles, bread and bakes, cakes and marshmallows. Festive music will be playing all day, including sets by bell-ringers, Victorian carol-singers, brass bands, school bands, jazz pianists and carnival street bands.
If you feel like having a festive night out with your housemates, we recommend visiting our friends at The Sun Hotel and Bar. Their delicious menu includes the incredible Festive Gourmet Board, which includes baked Camembert with rosemary croutes, pulled turkey sliders, pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, parsnip and Parmesan chips, fries, chutney, cranberry sauce and a honey mustard dressing (yum!), and is available throughout December. They also have a great range of drinks available in their bar area, including our own Lancaster Brewery favourites including Lancaster Blonde, Red, Amber and Black, as well as seasonal specials. The Sun Hotel and Bar also host a quiz night every Tuesday, and on the 18th December they will be holding a Christmas quiz with extra bonus rounds and festive themed questions; this is a great chance to get your mates together in a quiz team and enjoy a drink, while getting into the festive spirit!
We hope that this blog post has given the wonderful students of Lancaster some ideas to get you in the Christmas spirit, as well as some last minute gift ideas.
